2020s and onwards

Mero Rukh, Mero Santati launched in Sikkim, an initiative to advocate environmental responsibility right from birth. This initiative received the SKOCH Silver Award (2024) and was also selected to represent India at the 28th Conference of parties (COP) in Dubai. Sikkim bags six National Panchayat Awards 2024 at New Delhi.

2010s

The UN FAO and World Future Council awarded the prestigious Future Policy Gold Award to Sikkim for the 100% organic transformation held in Rome. The Khanchendzonga National park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, becoming India’s first mixed heritage site.

2000s

Sikkim became the first state to completely ban the use of plastics, etching the name of becoming a global leader towards eco-consciousness and sustainability. The colossal mission to transform Sikkim into an organic farming state was launched.

1990s

Road connectivity and infrastructures development ushered Sikkim into the 21st century. Quality Higher Educational Institutes such as Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), Loyala College, and the first District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) were established enhancing accessibility to higher education.

1980s

Visionary leader, Mr Nar Bahadur Bhandari was elected as the 2nd Chief Minster of Sikkim when his party, Sikkim Sangram Parishad won the state elections in 1985. This decade also witnessed a colossal development towards education with the establishment of numerous schools and higher institutions including the foundation of the Sikkim Central University.

1975s

Sikkim, in a historic movement abolished the monarchy and established democracy by becoming the 22nd state of the Indian Union. The first State Government was established with Mr Kazi Lhendup Dorjee at its helm as the first Chief Minister.

1970s

Sikkim was originally inhabited by Lepchas and later Bhutias who migrated from Tibet, bringing with them significant cultural and political influences. The then Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim was ruled by the Namgyal dynasty from 1642 to 1975. The Chogyals, starting with Phuntsog Namgyal, were spiritual and temporal kings who unified the region, upheld Buddhist traditions, and governed Sikkim as an independent monarchy for over three centuries until it became the 22nd State of the Indian Union in 1975.

Sikkim’s Organic Journey

Sikkim realized the need to transform the conventional practice of farming into organic farming for environmental sustainability and land health.
The decision to transform Sikkim into an organic state was made through a resolution passed at the Sikkim State Legislative Assembly on 2003 by the then Government.

Vision for Holistic and Sustainable Organic Farming in Sikkim- The Future Thrust” was organised in the state.
