About the event
Inauguration of Semen Collection and Processing Lab at Assam Lingzay pig farm established under National Livestock Mission at NER Conclave 2025
Govt. of India approved this project proposed by AH & VS Dept.,Government of Sikkim under Sub-Mission – Breed Development of Livestock and Poultry of National Livestock Mission. The project was duly approved by the State Level Executive Committee (SLEC) on 5th May 2022.
Project details-
- This lab is first of its kind in the state and the North-Eastern Region of the country.
- Area of Implementation: Pig Breeding Farm, Assam Lingzay, Mega Seed Project (MSP), Pakyong District, Sikkim. This lab is being supervised by a trained vet of the department.
Objectives:
- Increase productivity through propagation of high genetic merit of male germplasm through Artificial Insemination (AI),
- Reduce inbreeding,
- Skill Development and Training in Artificial Insemination technology for field functionaries
Need of the Project:
- Inbreeding effect in a herd of pig gets manifested shortly unless unrelated sire/dam line is maintained. So timely change of parent stock specially sire line is again an economic burden for a pig farmer.
- Due to regional constraint as hilly terrain in the state, it is cumbersome and expensive to opt for natural mating system.
- It is contextual that both natural mating as well as AI practices to be adopted equally for selective programme of pig.
Background: Assam Lingzay pig farm is only one government farm in Gangtok district to back up transfer technology relating to pig farming. Due to thrust support from the government, many private commercial pig farmers have established and more aspiring farmers are coming up. The farm has its strategic location which covers whole district with AI inputs and technology.
