Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department

Established with a vision to delivering a serene sanctuary to old, unproductive, and
abandoned cattle by providing a safe and natural environment where they can live in
peace and good health. Mamring Gaushala stands as a pioneering initiative by the
Sikkim Government. As the first government-managed Gaushala in the state, we are
committed to providing a safe, clean, and loving environment to the needy cattle.
Spanning over 7.31 acres, our Gaushala offers unique facilities, sustainable cattle
management practices, and dedicated veterinary care. Beyond shelter and care, we focus
on promoting traditional practices like organic farming using cow-based products,
environmental conservation, and community awareness programs. The existing
infrastructure comprises facilities like a veterinary dispensary block, a residential
complex for officers & staff, a feed & fodder storage go-down, a water storage tank,
free-range grazing areas and cow sheds for housing approximately 200 animals. The aim
is to create an ecosystem where the cows' needs are met, their welfare is ensured, and
the shelter generates income to maintain itself without over-reliance on the state
government. The animals will be raised mostly under a free-range system in the animal
grazing paddocks to allow the animals to exhibit their natural behavior and to promote
rotational grazing and utilize the green fodder reserve judiciously. This amenity would
also serve as a model unit for emulation in the region towards the promotion of Organic
Animal Husbandry practices by using cow dung/cow urine as natural
fertilizers/pesticides, and also establish a linkage with the religious and cultural heritage
of the country. The complex would be later developed as a major Tourist destination in
the State towards the generation of awareness about animal welfare issues and the need
for conservation of the indigenous breeds of cattle in the country.
At Mamring Gaushala, we believe that cows are not just animals, but a living symbol of
our heritage, culture, and rural economy. We invite citizens, volunteers, and
organizations to join hands with us in this noble cause.
